Kuchipudi
A traditional Indian Classical dance form

Kuchipudi (/kuːtʃiˈpuːdi/) is one of the eight major Indian classical dances It originates from a village named Kuchipudi in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Kuchipudi is a dance-drama performance, with its roots in the ancient Hindu Sanskrit text of Natya Shastra. It developed as a religious art linked to traveling bards, temples and spiritual beliefs, like all major classical dances of India.

Over the years, I have learned countless dances and participated in numerous presentations through the Academy. Some of these performances will stay etched in my memory forever, as they made a profound impact on me. The camaraderie of the Academy allowed me to make some life-long friendships, and the support and encouragement of my fellow dancers and teachers helped me grow as a performer and as a person.

Stage 3

KDA was not just a dance school for me, it was a second home. Each Sunday was filled with learning, rehearsals, and catching up with my dance batch mates. We celebrated several milestones together, including birthdays and Rangapravesams, and simply enjoyed being in each other's company.

2012
Stage 4

But it wasn't just the dance that kept me coming back to KDA each week. The Dunkin Donuts right next door was also a major draw! I bet Dunkin runs on KDA! I must have bought at least a million donuts over the past 12 years!

Looking back on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities and experiences that KDA has provided me with. It has been a long and rewarding journey, one that has shaped my personality, amplified my abilities in all dimensions of life, and kept me grounded in my cultural roots. Dancing has become an integral part of my identity, and I can't imagine my life without it.

My Guiding Light

Guru Smt Lakshmi Babu is an impactful teacher to many students in the Washington DC metro area as the founder and director of Kuchipudi Dance Academy. She has conducted 40 dance solo debuts performed by her students since 2002. In 2019 she received a master’s degree in Kuchipudi Dance from the Silicon Andhra University, CA.
Kuchipudi Dance Academy, or KDA, was established in 1996 by Guru Smt. Lakshmi Babu under the guidance of her Guru Padmashree Dr. Shobha Naidu. The institution, today, has grown to encompass over 200 students with branches in the DMV area. Kuchipudi Dance Academy, or KDA, was established in 1996 by Guru Smt. She has won many awards including teacher’s award from The National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (NFAA), the Maryland Governor’s citation, and an honorary title ‘Nava Natya Kala Vibhushani’. Finally she received an excellence and recognition award from the American Telugu Association for her accomplishments in the performing arts. Kuchipudi Dance Academy has crossed its 25th-year milestone and the 25th-anniversary celebrations were held virtually in 2021. A finale titled Rajatha Sobha – a grand tribute to Guru Sobha Naidu was held in June, 2023. Laasyam Creative Media is the media banner founded by Lakshmi Babu with the intention to further promote the Arts. Thank you Guru Lakshmi Babu for bringing this beautiful art form to the students of KDA and enabling the sustenance of the art.

My Inspiration

My beloved mother, Padmini Nidumolu, holds a special place in my heart as my invaluable mentor. She has not only been my unwavering supporter but also my source of inspiration, guiding me towards excellence. A remarkable Kuchipudi dancer in her own right, she has meticulously nurtured my passion for this art form, ensuring its preservation and growth throughout my formative years

With unwavering determination and an undying love for Kuchipudi, my mother embarked on her own extraordinary journey, culminating in her breathtaking Rangapravesam in 2022. Witnessing her relentless pursuit of excellence and her unyielding dedication to passing on this ancient tradition to future generations has been awe-inspiring.

The bond we share extends beyond the realm of blood, as we unite our spirits through dance, forging a connection that transcends words. Together, we have touched the hearts of audiences far and wide, leaving an indelible mark with our captivating performances

In the presence of my remarkable mother, I stand empowered, armed with her teachings, and fueled by her unwavering support. Her presence in my life is an everlasting source of strength, igniting a fire within me to push boundaries and explore new horizons in the realm of Kuchipudi

As I continue to tread the path paved by my mother’s love and guidance, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible journey we have embarked upon together. The love, wisdom, and shared moments of artistic brilliance have woven a tapestry of memories that I will cherish for a lifetime.

But, with my Guru’s guidance, my family’s support, and my passion for Kuchipudi, I’m ready to take on the stage and make this a memorable milestone. As I prepare for this event, I feel a mix of emotions – excitement, nervousness, and gratitude. I’m grateful to my Guru, who has not only taught me dance but also instilled in me the values of perseverance, discipline, and hard work. This beautiful composition describes Goddess Alamelu Manga, the consort of Sri Venkateswara Swamy. She arrives as her beautiful emerald bangles dangle. She arrives as scores of beautiful divine women hold the torch and fan her with utmost devotion. The dancer portrays the Goddess herself depicting grace and divine beauty.

Usha pravesham is a pravesha daravu introducing pretty princess Usha , daughter of demon king Banasura. She spends time with her dearest sakhis and the verses beautifully depicts their playful interaction. Her eyes can only be compared to blue lotus flower and her smile like a nascent bud that is in process of blooming. She is in her heyday of youth ,her body like a thunder bolt. Usha adorned in her intricate and precious jewelry resembles goddess Laxmi . While describing herself she fondly reminisces her love Aniruddha, grandson of lord Krishna.

In this item the heroine is expressing a Khandita nayika avastha or an angry state of mind towards the hero after she finds him straying. She uses a biting and sarcastic tone towards him ultimately expressing her disdain for him and asking him to get out.

The panchakshara literally means "five syllables" in Sanskrit, referring to the five syllables of na, ma, śi, vā, and ya. It is associated with Shiva's mantra, Om Namah Shivaya, which also contains these syllables. According to vedic texts, these five syllables represent the five elements of the human body. Na is associated with prithvi (Earth), Ma is associated with jala (Water), Si is associated with agni (Fire), Aa is associated with vayu (Air), and Ya is associated with akasha (Space).

The composition is set around the time when Sri Krishna returns to Mathura after killing Kamsa, his uncle and the evil King. Krishna was welcomed by all the Gopikas. One such Gopika depicted by the dancer describes Lord Krishna with great bhakti and is stunned when He unexpectedly appears before her. The Gopikas, enamored by his grace, finally surrender to their Lord and sing , “We welcome you. We have no refuge, except with you and only you”.

The composition is an ode to Goddess Durga. The salutations are as follows.``Oh Mother Durga, the vanquisher of all enemies. Nanda, Sunanda and other yogis bow to you. Diamond studded dancing bells on your feet echo with melodious notes of samaveda. The celestial musicians, devatas and men sing your praise. Your beautiful body is covered with a golden dress. You are the embodiment of satchidanandam (existence consciousness, bliss). You are omnipotent, omnifarious (nanaroopa). You remain forever in the thoughts of Narayana Teertha.”

Throughout my journey as a dancer, I have had the privilege of performing on various stages across the country and even internationally. Each performance is a unique experience that teaches me valuable lessons and allows me to connect with the audience in a special way.
Performing is not just about showcasing my skills, it's about channeling my energy, connecting with the audience, and telling a story through the art of dance. It is a spiritual and emotional experience that leaves me feeling empowered and fulfilled.
However, it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to make each performance a success. Hours of practice, warming up, and preparing my costume and jewelry all come together to create a seamless and unforgettable performance. But it's all worth it because each performance brings me closer to achieving my goals as a dancer.
I am eternally grateful to my Guru Lakshmi Babu for guiding me on this incredible journey and for providing me with countless opportunities to showcase my passion for dance. I look forward to continuing to learn and grow as a dancer through every performance.
